Capturing the Essence of West Point: A Guide to Scheduling Your Spring Photo shoot

As a photographer based in the picturesque West Point, NY, I understand the importance of capturing the unique journey of cadets at the United States Military Academy. One crucial aspect to consider when scheduling your photo shoot is the season, as it greatly influences the backdrop and mood of your images. In this blog post, we'll explore the best times to schedule your session, whether you're aiming for the vibrant early spring blossoms or the lush green foliage later in the spring.

  1. Early Spring Blossoms (Last week of March- Last Week of April):

If you're dreaming of a photo shoot surrounded by the delicate beauty of blossoming flowers, scheduling your session in late March to early April is the ideal choice. During this time, the West Point campus transforms into a sea of vibrant colors as cherry blossoms, magnolias, and other spring flowers come to life. The contrast between the vivid blooms and the historic architecture creates a visually stunning backdrop. At this time, there is little to no leaves on trees until Mid April, when the trees get this super cool lime green color on the trees. We have a variety of cherry trees on post, and they blossom at different weeks throughout the spring. By early May, they are usually completely gone, except for a small row by the commissary that I use occasionally.

2. Green Foliage (Beginning Mid-April):

For those who prefer a more classic, verdant backdrop with lush greenery on the trees, scheduling your photo shoot in mid April to Graduation is the way to go. During this period, the trees on the West Point grounds are adorned with fresh leaves, creating a canopy of vibrant green that complements the beauty of the Hudson Valley.

Tips for Scheduling:

  1. Get the Link, schedule: To secure your preferred time slot, especially during the sought-after early spring blossom season, it's advisable to book your session once you get the link. This ensures you get the best possible date for your photo shoot.

  2. Consider Weather Conditions: I will make the call for weather. West Point is near the famed Storm King Mountain which can redirect a storm to the north or south within 20 minutes of a session. I’ve seen it happen a lot, so please let me make the call. If something lands on your calendar, let me know. We will reschedule. Just please communicate with me, your photographer.

  3. All Conditions, except Rain: I will photograph in all conditions except for rain. Cloudy, Sunny, etc. I run a tight schedule, and you’d be surprised what I can do in post production. You may see stormy clouds, and I see dynamic range that adds loads of drama.

Conclusion:

Whether you opt for the enchanting early spring blossoms or the timeless beauty of green foliage, West Point offers a stunning backdrop for your photo shoot. By carefully considering the timing of your session, you can ensure that your photos capture the essence of this significant chapter in your journey at the United States Military Academy.
